FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

Full back Lahm loves to cut inside onto his favoured right foot as he surges down the left wing. He played his early football with Bayern Munich before heading to VfB Stuttgart on loan in the 2002/03 season.
He matured rapidly in two seasons at Stuttgart, then made his international debut against Croatia and played every minute of UEFA Euro 2004 for Germany.

A torn cruciate ligament briefly halted his progress, but he has come back strong and, in 2005, he returned to Bayern Munich.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

One of FC Bayern München's finest recent products, Philipp Lahm's pace, technical ability and dedication have catapulted him on to the international scene.

Club
Spotted at a schoolboy tournament by Bayern, Lahm made his debut as a substitute in the final minute of their 2002/03 UEFA Champions League campaign against RC Lens. He was then sent to VfB Stuttgart on a two-year loan to gain experience and was terrific in his first season, establishing himself as Germany's finest left-back, but his second campaign was wracked by bad luck with a stress fracture of his right foot and a torn cruciate ligament ruining his season. However, Bayern offered him a two-year extension to his contract on his return to Munich but the 2005/06 domestic campaign was to prove frustrating too. Just 20 appearances, eight as a substitute, marked a disappointing return.

National team
A member of the Germany squad which reached the final of the 2002 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, Lahm made his senior debut against Croatia in February 2004 and was a pillar of the team at UEFA EURO 2004™. Having missed the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup with that cruciate injury, he was brilliant at the 2006 World Cup, scoring the first goal of the finals with a tremendous strike against Costa Rica as the hosts went on to reach the semi-finals.

Did you know?
Felix Magath never watched Lahm before signing him for Stuttgart; a recommendation from Bayern's reserve team coach Hermann Gerland was all he needed.
