Bayern Munich champs again, Hoffenheim surprise, Lewandowski still best

May 25, 2017 12:33 AM PDT

The FC crew look back on the careers of Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm as both prepare to retire after Bayern's final match. In the end, FC Bayern Munich's Bundesliga campaign, a fifth title in a row, left no question unanswered. That's apart from the most important one of all: How much is this Meisterschaft really worth? Nobody seems entirely sure in Bavaria. Executive chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been at pains to point out that winning the league was still "the most honest title," and that the team's achievement wasn't being adequately recognised. President Uli Hoeness, on the other hand, is of the opinion that...

Retiring Philip Lahm and Xabi Alonso said goodbye to the Bayern Munich fans at their Bundesliga title party. They walked off eight minutes and three minutes from time to a standing ovation and later celebrated on the pitch in front of the Allianz Arena crowd. It didn't feel staged (though you can be pretty sure Carlo Ancelotti was going to take them off at a certain point so they could have their moment in the sun) yet it was no less emotional and heartfelt. I was asked...

With typical understated class, Alonso gets ready to walk away from football

May 19, 2017 12:14 PM PDT

Paul Mariner and Mark Donaldson reflect on Xabi Alonso's storied career after the Spaniard announced his retirement Thursday. Craig Burley and Mark Donaldson give their take on what makes the ultimate footballer based on five core attributes. The Bernabeu tends not the be the most sentimental of venues during the heat of the battle, so what happened in the 75th minute of Real Madrid's Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Bayern Munich -- with the tie in the balance -- was especially significant. Facing an away-goals exit, it was reasonable enough for Bayern that a forward like Thomas Muller should replace the deep-lying Xabi Alonso; more significant, though, was the spine-tingling ovation that the former Madrid midfielder...

May 18, 2017 12:30 AM PDT

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol says Philipp Lahm is one of the best ever, but fears he's calling it quits too soon. MUNICH -- Philipp Lahm is the best defender of his generation, and his retirement at the age of 33 will leave a massive void, not just at Bayern Munich -- a club he led with intelligence and always by example -- but also within the game. Lahm's unswerving brilliance helped him to eight Bundesliga titles (sharing the record with Mehmet Scholl, Oliver Kahn and Bastian Schweinsteiger), six DFB Pokals, the 2013 Champions League and then the World Cup a year later. World-class in at least four positions...

After 'only' winning the league, the pressure is on Ancelotti and Bayern

May 17, 2017 07:16 AM PDT

While Carlo Ancelotti took his place on the podium, Jurgen Klopp and Diego Simeone were presented as live holograms. Paul Mariner evaluates the quality of the Bundesliga apart from the top clubs of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. It's been an uncharacteristically quiet May in Munich, devoid of an extended run in the Champions League for the first time in six years. Wednesday's public training session on the sun-flooded pitch at Sabener Strasse had that unmistakable "last week at school" feeling, the intensity winding down before the big summer holidays. There were lots of smiles and cheers from the crowd when Jerome Boateng smashed in a volley in a five-a-side game. Head master Carlo Ancelotti looked even more relaxed than...

May 15, 2017 08:27 AM PDT

Bayern Munich scored three times after the 85th minute to win away at RB Leipzig. If there was a lingering doubt that Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title might be one of those feats where the hipsters throw up a "yeah, but" and point to the performance of RB Leipzig, the Bavarians' 5-4 away victory presumably knocked that notion on the head. The win left Bayern 13 points clear of second-place Leipzig with one game to go. They won both encounters by an aggregate score of 8-4. (If you're one of those people who swears by Expected Goals, the cumulative xG scoreline is 8.90 to 2.18.) More...
